Survey Article Connecting E8 to 1-d Magnetic System
I spend a lot of time scanning through the postings on arXiv and every once in a while I stumble on a really nice paper. This one caught my eye today: Did a 1-dimensional magnet detect a 248-dimensional Lie algebra?
Minimal models in conformal field theory are the stars of the show in the set of results we're led through in this paper. I gotta say it's always nice to see a real story emerge connecting abstract algebra with physics so I couldn't resist this post. Though perhaps I'm a bit too warm to E8 after recently reading Symmetry and the Monster by Mark Ronan (available at Amazon).
But it's not often that you find an article written by guys who can walk you through the experimental physics, the theoretical physics, the associated mathematics, AND the literature. Well done guys!
